Working Product from an Investor view

Let’s say you are working on a product to build an application to help patients consult doctors over a video call. You are using Scrum, and at the end of the first Sprint, you want to have a working product. Which of the following is a working product:

  • A simple webpage for patients to see available doctors, call hospitals, and book
  • A WhatsApp number was set up for people to send messages to book a doctor’s slot, confirm and call them on WhatsApp at the given time slot
  • A website to allow patients to sign up for the app
  • A phone number to call and book slots and use WhatsApp call for a consultation
  • A landing page of the app
  • A clickable prototype

Think like an investor in the product. Write up your answer with a valid reason.

The above scenario was shared with Leanpitch Alumni and Agility Thinking community members. The best answer would be converted into a blog and the winner will be awarded an Amazon Echo Dot. So many entries and one winner. Rohit Gautam was chosen as the winner based on his take on the scenario. Continue reading below for the answer.

Rohit Gautam:

The end goal of the product is to help patients consult doctors over a video call. The minimum feature it requires is a phone number and a service where patients can do video calls. We are using Scrum in a team that requires incremental product every sprint which has value to the end customer (In this case a patient). Also, the outcome for the stakeholders so that they can book the patients and have good ROI.

For me, the working product at the end of the first sprint from the choices given is no 4. “A Phone number to call and book slots and use WhatsApp call for a consultation” As an investor in the product, I want the first increment to have at least a phone number for patients to call and consult. So that the value of the first increment is there as an outcome of consultations booked. It is a skeleton for the product, a phone number to use, and a service “WhatsApp” which can be used as a video call service in future increments. It also has fewer steps to book the slots and call for a consultation.

I do believe in keeping things simple, building a product from the minimum viable product feature, and reviewing it at the end of Sprint. By using the service developed at the end of the sprint, we are getting the “Earliest Testable Product”. This will enable quick feedback e.g. how many users called and how many users have WhatsApp installed on their phones.

This will help stakeholders gather data on how many patients have smartphones with WhatsApp installed without even investing to build a webpage with numbers. Also, it will book the slots and patients can still call on the number without WhatsApp. Fewer steps to gather data. With the information in hand, stakeholders can make informed decisions on what to build next.
