Diwali – ‘A successful release’


Diwali or Deepawali or Dipavali is an Indian festival of lights. Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness. Diwali is all about overcoming the darkness by lightness. Here, the darkness means ignorance, enmity, poverty, sin and so on. The lightness here is the solution for overcoming that darkness. Different culture has a different interpretation for this festival.

During the course of this festival, people buy new clothes, sweets, crackers, and households. People who celebrate Diwali, clean their houses (some may choose to paint), decorate houses to their likings, wear new clothes, offer prayers to God, make new sweets and share with their neighbors and relatives.

Diwali is a day which brings joy while the preparation to celebrate almost starts before a month of that day. Diwali also means hope. Every small street vendor will be able to make a living during the month of Diwali. Since it brings happiness, Diwali is called a celebration.

I see Diwali as a Product release. Steve Jobs announced the first iPhone version years back and it hasn’t ended there. Every time, a new release happens, we always start expecting when the next release will happen. Same happens with Diwali. It may be ending for the current year, but we all open our calendar and see with joy on when is the next Diwali.

Everyone works hard for this successful release. We are all just customers and consumers in one or other way. There are real developers who work tirelessly behind making Diwali happen. Cracker industry works the whole year just for selling it on Diwali.

They rely totally on Diwali sales and for them it’s hope. While they sell too small during normal days, they sell huge on Diwali. The garment industry, Sweet shops, small vendors, textile shops and all types of bazaars works hard. Everyone wants to buy something, and everyone wants to sell something. Some or other way, they all boost each other’s revenue. It’s a yearly gala of transaction.

Diwali has improved so much, and you know what, Diwali is Agile. Diwali is fixed timebox and a year-long iteration. I still wonder how Diwali was and Diwali is now. The Diwali I have celebrated during my childhood was way too different than the Diwali I celebrated during my teenage and as the age and stage progressed, it changed.

I am not talking about my experience of Diwali but the new versions of Diwali every year. New hopes and new happiness as requirements for its release every single year. Different people working hard to make a living and they have all been rewarded on every single release of Diwali, every single year. God himself as the Product Owner & Stakeholder coming up with new features every release, just the way we consumers like it to be.

“Developers, Stakeholders, Customers, and Consumers all working on a sustainable pace every year and deliver a finer Diwali”.

Diwali never failed to deliver value and the new features it delivers are just as amazing as it ever was. Happy Agile Diwali to everyone from Leanpitchers.
