CHANGE – What a Pain!!!
Is Change Easy? | Is Change difficult?
All Change efforts have something in common – We need to act differently.
Can you get people to start in a new way? The next thought comes to mind is “People resist change” but not always. It depends on the sheer magnitude of the change. Would anyone agree to work for a boss who’d wake you up twice a night, screaming for trivial issues. People don’t resist the massive change, they volunteer for it. Some Changes are hard and some are easy. We welcome lot more big changes in our life like Marriage, New Home, New technologies, and new job but some changes are difficult like Smokers keep smoking etc…
The first surprise to me about change is “If you want to change someone’s behaviour, you’ve got to change the person’s situation”. Is it true?
You can send an alcoholic to rehab, where the new environment will help him go dry but what happens when he leaves and loses that influence.
You might see a boost in productivity from your sales representative when the Sales Manager shadows but what happens when the situation return to normal. You have got to influence not only the environment but their hearts and Minds but the problem is often the hearts and minds disagree.
Scientific research says, Human Beings are Schizophrenic and Human Brain has two sides:
Consider a scenario, one wants to wake up early by 05: 00 A.M. Our rational side says to get up early to have some exercises before we leave for the office but the emotional side wakes up in the darkness of early morning, snoozing alarm clock and wants nothing in the world so much as a few minutes to sleep. Our emotional side feels the pain and pleasure whereas our rational side is analytical and looks into the future.
Our Emotional side is Elephant and rational side is Rider. Rider holds the reins and seems to be leader but rider control is precarious because rider is so small relative to Elephant. Whenever they disagree, Rider is going to lose. They are completely overmatched. Most of us are familiar with situation when Elephant overpowers Rider.
You must have experienced it if you’re overslept, overeaten, procrastinated, quit smoking, skipping the gym and so on…The weakness of Elephant is that its Lazy, always looking for quick pay-off compared to long pay-offs.
“Change often fails because the Rider simply can’t keep the Elephant on the road long enough to reach the destination”
The elephant is not always the bad guy, Emotion is the Elephant’s turf- Love, compassion, sympathy, loyalty. When you feel that you need to stand for yourself, that’s Elephant and even more important if you contemplating the change, the Elephant is the one who get the things done. Rider’s weakness is spinning his wheels.
The Rider tends to overanalyze and over think things. If you have to bring a change, you have to appeal to both. Riders provide the planning and direction whereas Elephant provides energy. If you reach the rider of your team but not the elephant, team members will have understanding without motivation and in the opposite situation; they will have passion without direction.
In both cases, flaws can be paralyzing. A reluctant elephant and wheel spinning rider can both ensure that nothing changes but when elephant and rider moves together, Change can easily come. Just you have to:
Direct the Rider
Motivate the Elephant
Shape the path
